If your financial situation is unstable, this is a great time to start better habits for improving your financial situation.

3 years ago, I was financially lost. Always broke. Part-time job, large student loan, kids, house, and no savings. I didn’t believe I had what it took to change my situation. But I did, and so can you. By changing your financial habits, your life can actually change.

1. Make a budget

Make a budget for every income. A budget is a plan for how you will spend your money. It doesn’t have to be complicated.

I divide my income into four posts :

  • Fixed expenses — insurance, cell phone, union, and down payment on the student loan.
  • Living expenses — house expenses, groceries, clothes, expenses regarding the kids, and streaming.
  • Short-term savings — Savings for specific purposes, such as Christmas, summer holidays, business, health costs, and savings for an emergency fund.
  • Long-term savings — savings for the future, retirement, and my kids.

2. Emergency fund
