Strategies for Getting Through a Writing Challenge

My lessons learned from previous writing challenges

To all of you starting a writing challenge: fantastic! It will be a blast.

Participating in a writing challenge is demanding, educational, stressful, enlightening, and a lot of fun. The satisfaction after completing a challenge is worth all the effort.

To tackle such an extensive task, it is important to be prepared.

Here are my best tips for making the experience as good as possible:

  • Make a list of topics you plan to write about.
    Creativity is fickle. It can’t be trusted when the deadline is approaching.
  • Sacred hours
    Decide when you want to write. Don’t let the hustle and bustle eat your treasured writing time.
  • Focus!
    Distractions are a killer for productivity. Place yourself in a quiet spot or use music to block out noise. Check out my Writer’s Playlist on Spotify, if you need inspiration.
  • Education
    Seek advice about how to become a better writer and put it to practice immediately.
    My story: I’m a procrastinator, and my default behavior is to read or hear something useful, thinking I must learn more…
